Website launched to give a voice to Wisconsin residents with health care coverage problems
Almost ten percent of Wisconsinites are uninsured. That means over 530,000 Wisconsinites have no access to health care. If 530,000 of us speak out, will our legislators finally listen?
A new website called Uninsured in Wisconsin (www.uninsuredinwisconsin.com) was just launched in order to create a voice for those in Wisconsin who are uninsured, underinsured, and experiencing problems with our current health care system.
Offering the opportunity to anyone in the state to post their health care horror stories for all to see (stories may be posted anonymously), the website’s creator, who is uninsured, hopes that these personal accounts will urge the state to adopt legislation creating universal health care.
“Since one in ten people in Wisconsin are uninsured, and a large number of others are underinsured, there are many, many stories out there waiting to be told,” stated Lori Nitzel, the website’s founder. “I started this website out of the sheer frustration of feeling that, as an uninsured individual for over eight years, I had no way of making a difference. I hope that this website will allow people like me to give voice to how an unethical and dysfunctional health care system treats them.”
The website includes a “Stories” section, where anyone who wants to can post their stories; links to articles and organizations advocating universal health care; a forum for discussion about the issues; a “What would I do if I had insurance” page; and information on contacting state legislators in order to urge them to fix our broken health care system.
Says Nitzel, “The goal is to create a place which, when viewed by legislators, will leave them with no option but to do the right thing.”
