What I would do if...

Imagine this: You have recurring headaches. You call the doctor and make an appointment. You go in the next day to see the doctor, who arranges more tests. You walk out of the office and you don't pay a dime. You show up the next day for your tests at a nearby hospital. You leave the hospital and you don't pay a dime. You don't get any bills in the mail later. The next week you sprain your ankle, not paying attention while stepping off a curb. It really hurts and you worry that it's broken. You go to the emergency room. They confirm it's a sprain, give you some crutches, and you leave without paying a dime. You get no bills later for this.

Imagine you have health insurance that covers your every sickness and ailment. It is stand-alone coverage - not associated with employment or a spouse. It costs you nothing at the point of delivery. Everyone has it.

What you would do differently if you had complete, stand-alone health care coverage at no cost to you?

For example:

  • Would you seek medical care you need?
  • Would you leave an unhealthy relationship?
  • Would you quit a job that is too stressful or physically demanding, or that isn't in your field?
  • Would you retire?
  • Would you go back to school for a degree you've always wanted?

If I had health insurance, I would seek the opinion of a doctor when I start to sense there is a problem with my health rather than waiting until the problem is severe, more serious and more costly in every sense of the word.

I would get a mammogram, find out why my toes are numb, and get a dental checkup if possible. Is that too much to expect?
